Rebit 2.5″ 160GB backup device

The box says “Ridiculously Simple Backup” and I am glad to report that it is just that.  This is the answer to the Digitally Daunteds’ prayer for security without stress.  We tested the 160 GB size portable single PC device on our daughter’s laptop.  We had been diligent about backing up our main PC and the adult’s laptops, but we exercised less vigilance with the teenager’s computers.  Without any instructions, our daughter plugged the Rebit in, it backed up her files onto the device.  Once connected, it gave off a soothing blue glow.  The product’s size and sleek design appealed to even her demanding aesthetics.

As long as the device is plugged in, it automatically backs up all of the data on your hard drive that would be required to recover from a system failure onto a repaired or new hard drive.  Restoring from the backup was easy but even if you don’t choose to restore from backup yourself, the important thing is that the backup is there.   There is no schedule to set, no questions about what to backup–this is designed for ease of use and peace of mind.

You can use your backup to recover deleted files or an older version of a document by double-clicking the Rebit icon that installs on your computer after first connecting.  And you don’t worry about the device filling up as it deletes older versions of backups to avoid running out of space.

The 160GB size was more than adequate for her laptop (it is also available in 320 GB or a multi-PC 320 GB size and configuration in the portable units).  The suggested retail is $149.95, but prices vary according to retailers.  Rebit recommends that you buy the size that is the same size or larger than your hard drive.  There is also a selection of single and multiple PC desktop units (in 500 GB and 1TB sizes) or you can choose to use the software that gives your external hard drive of your choice the same functionality as far as simple backup and recovery that the Rebit appliance provides.

I would recommend this model as being perfect for your laptop when you travel as well.  You can leave the Rebit behind or store it separately from your laptop bag to insure against data loss if your laptop is stolen or damaged.  When you disconnect the device, don’t worry, it will update the backup upon reconnection.

This model comes with a small storage pouch.  It requires no external power or batteries–it draws power via the USB connection.  It works with Windows XP and Vista editions.

The Rebit website has a support contact form and has warranty information, instruction guides and copies of the recovery software if the included disk is lost.  You should take note of your software key and store it in a safe place.

No one wants to think about worst case scenarios.  After making this wise purchase, you can be confident that you have taken the most important step to protect yourself against the hard to imagine damage that losing your important documents or cherished photos would cause.
